Traditions trace the vrat to the Ramayana, where Sita is said to have kept it, and to the Mahabharata, where Draupadi is said to have fasted for her family's well-being. Families keep their own stories, passed down in the songs sung at the ghat.

Arghya to the rising sun at dawn. The fast is then broken with prasad.

At the ghat
Go in a group, keep children close to an adult near the water, and follow the barriers and guidance of local volunteers and authorities.
Carry your puja waste back or use the collection points. Avoid plastic, and keep the river and the path clean for the next family.
Reach the ghat early, carry a torch for the dark morning, and keep warm clothes handy. Early November mornings are cold.
